Decking installation
Make the deck part ofthe way the garden works.
Decking can create a practical seating, dining or transition area, but the layout needs to work with the
garden rather than simply cover a space.
We plan new and replacement decks around the available area, changes in level, access routes, existing
features and how the finished space will be used. Timber and composite options can both be considered
before the final specification is agreed.
Timber or composite
Timber or composite decking. One properly planned structure.
01
Timber decking
Natural, versatile and easy to work into the garden.
Timber provides a traditional natural finish and gives plenty of flexibility around shapes, edges, steps
and changes in level. The exact timber and treatment can be selected to suit the project and desired finish.
Natural timber appearance
Flexible for bespoke layouts
Can be refreshed with suitable finishes
Requires ongoing cleaning and maintenance
02
Composite decking
A consistent finish with lower routine maintenance.
Composite decking is often chosen where a consistent appearance and reduced routine maintenance are
priorities. Board systems vary, so spacing, fixings and installation details should follow the selected
manufacturer's instructions.
Wide choice of colours and finishes
Usually no routine staining or oiling
Still benefits from regular cleaning
Installed to the selected system requirements
Real project
Built from the structure up,not just the boards down.
These photographs show a timber decking project during construction, including the supporting frame and board
installation. The finished surface matters, but so does the structure underneath it.

Built around the garden
The details below the boardsmatter just as much.
The supporting structure, board layout, access, edges, steps, ventilation and water management all need to
be considered before installation begins. Those details influence how the deck feels, drains and performs
once it is in everyday use.

Built for durability
The parts you don't seematter just as much.
A deck can look good on day one but long-term performance depends heavily on the frame beneath it. We use
robust structural timber and additional protective details to help the substructure cope with outdoor exposure.
01
UC4 structural timber
Higher-level protection for the supporting frame.
For timber decking substructures we use UC4 pressure-treated structural timber. UC4 is the treatment class
recommended for timber providing exterior structural support, including deck joists, beams and posts. It
provides a higher level of preservative protection for timber exposed to demanding outdoor conditions or
positioned close to the ground.
02
Joist protection tape
An extra barrier where the frame is most exposed.
We apply quality self-sealing decking tape to the top faces of timber joists before the boards are fitted.
This creates an additional moisture-resistant barrier at the board-to-joist interface and helps protect
timber around fixing points where water could otherwise find its way into the frame.
03
Cut-end treatment
Freshly exposed timber is not simply left untreated.
When pressure-treated timber is cross-cut or notched, the newly exposed end grain is treated with a
suitable cut-end wood preservative. This helps maintain protection at areas where factory-treated timber
has been cut during construction.
Good materials are only part of a good deck.
UC4 treatment, joist tape and cut-end protection complement correct structural sizing, corrosion-resistant
fixings, ventilation and free drainage — they do not replace them.
How it works
From the first look at the spaceto the finished deck.
01
Site visit
We look at the outdoor space, access, levels, approximate size and any existing deck or structure.
02
Material & layout
We discuss timber or composite, intended use, board direction, steps, levels and the overall finish.
03
Clear quotation
The proposed work, materials and relevant removal or preparation are set out before work starts.
04
Installation
The deck is set out and installed, followed by final details and a tidy handover of the work area.
East Midlands coverage
Decking projects acrossthe East Midlands.
Based in Nottingham, we undertake suitable decking projects across Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire,
Lincolnshire and surrounding East Midlands areas.
If you are planning a new deck or replacing an existing one, send us your postcode, approximate dimensions
and any photographs you have. We can discuss the material options and arrange the next step.
Yes. We install timber and composite decking and can discuss which option best suits the appearance,
maintenance expectations, layout and budget for the project.
What timber do you use for the decking subframe?
For timber decking frames we use UC4 pressure-treated structural timber. UC4 refers to the preservative
treatment/use class rather than the timber strength grade; structural grade and section size are selected
to suit the layout and span. We also use joist protection tape and treat exposed cut ends as additional
protective measures.
Can you replace an existing deck?
Yes. We can assess an existing deck and quote for replacement where appropriate. The condition of the
existing structure, access and any removal or disposal required can be considered as part of the quotation.
Which is better: timber or composite decking?
Neither is automatically better for every garden. Timber provides a natural appearance and design
flexibility. Composite is often chosen for a consistent finish and lower routine maintenance. Cost,
appearance, board system and intended use all affect the choice.
Does composite decking need maintenance?
Yes, although routine maintenance is generally lower than for timber. Outdoor decking still needs regular
cleaning to remove dirt, leaves, algae and other debris. Product-specific care should follow the selected
manufacturer's guidance.
What affects the cost of a decking project?
Cost depends on the deck size, timber or composite board choice, supporting structure, ground preparation,
height, steps, edging, access and any existing structure that needs to be removed. We prefer to assess the
actual project before giving a firm quotation.
Do I need planning permission for garden decking?
Many domestic decking projects can fall within permitted development, subject to conditions. Planning
Portal guidance includes limits relating to height, garden coverage and position, and additional rules can
apply in some locations or to particular properties. Raised or unusual schemes should be checked before
work starts.
